ABOUT FOUNDER EDUCARE CENTRE
ABOUT FOUNDER EDUCARE
In 1997 the late principal Sharon Nomsangaphi Melani opened the doors of Founder Educare Centre in her small shack home in Mkhaza, Khayelitsha – a township in Cape Town, South Africa. Her ambition was to provide the neighborhood children with a caring and safe place to learn.
In 2000 the municipality gave her free space in front of her home, and from there this family school grew. Today Founder is run by her son Principal Wodwa Melani who, when just a young boy himself, would wake up at 4am to welcome the first child dropped off. He would then help fetch the other kids before walking 11 km to his own school. After school, he would help at aftercare. Today Principal Wodwa Melani is proud that the children of those he helped look after, attend his school. Principal Wodwa is an active partner in the rebuilding of this school and has himself already raised R100,000 ($5,500) for the project. With your help we hope to reach our big target of R1.5 milion (+-$85,000). Â Â >>CONTACT MENSCH FOR MORE INFO

WHY IS A REBUILD NEEDED?
Currently 180 children attend the preschool which is in dire condition. The ceilings and walls are scattered with holes and are falling apart. When it’s rainy, windy and cold, the children get wet and sick. The windows no longer open which in summer creates an extremely hot environment for the babies and children. The toilets are constantly blocked.

WHY REBUILD
Currently 180 children attend the preschool which is in dire condition. The ceilings and walls are scattered with holes and are falling apart. When it’s rainy, windy and cold, the children get wet and sick. The windows no longer open which in summer creates an extremely hot environment for the babies and children. Rebuilding Founder is designed to allow for phased demolishing and rebuilding of the Educare Center to reduce disruption to the children’s learning. The material to be used is compliant with Council-approved building regulations enabling Founder to apply for a government grant. Currently, falling short of building standards is the main obstacle that limits the provision of a grant. This grant is valued at R15 per child per day (capped at R100 000 p/a). The money can be used for food, development toys and learning aids. This additional money is essential income for the school as not all parents are able to pay even a small fee.
