For the first time in 3 years Mandela Day is happening LIVE IN-PERSON AND ONLINE!!
Join us at The Langa quarter in Cape Town, or via livestream from wherever you are in the world on Zoom!
WHAT WILL WE BE DOING?
Together we will be preparing a delicious soup – chopping veggies grown locally by urban farmers in Langa – to be distributed for Mandela Day to local communities in need. Followed by a ‘Lunch & Learn’ – talks and discussions with local farmers, social entrepreneurs and community organisers.
The soup we make will launch Langa’s latest ‘Food for Purpose’ product, a delicious soup that will soon be retailed at markets and shops with a portion of the proceeds reinvested into the local food supply chain.
WHERE WILL WE BE DOING IT?
The Langa Quarter in Cape Town is a secure community hub space in Langa, 10 mins from the CBD. A social enterprise pilot project that encourages the development of small businesses and sustainable township tourism, and powered by the local community. Home to the Sun Diner (Langa means ‘sunshine’), a barista-run coffee shop, and multiple micro business pilots and community events at any one time.
WHO WILL BENEFIT?
By buying a ticket to this event, you will be helping feed and create food sustainability in the community of Langa:
- Soup made will go towards feeding 1500 people from Langa.
- Help set up and maintain 200 household food gardens providing food and income for 200 families.
- Provide seedlings and compost to 150 urban farmers and their families, across 31 food farms.
WHO IS INVOLVED?
This event is a collaboration of community organisations across Cape Town. Organising beneficiary partners include Ikhaya Le Langa‘s Black City Farms Project; SA Urban Food & Farming Trust (SAUFFT) – also known as ‘The Langa Agrihub’ established in partnership with the JDC and The Horwitz Family Trust; and Mensch (Read more below). The event is supported by the Cape SA Jewish Board of Deputies, and the United Jewish Campaign.
HOW DO I GET INVOLVED?
Book and join us on the day or just buy a ticket to support! 1 ticket gets you 2 in-person entries or online viewing (kids under 12 attend for free) – and the more tickets you buy, the more people we can help feed and provide the tools to feed themselves, well beyond Mandela Day! Thanks in advance for your generosity! We will be in touch to find out if you will be attending online or via Zoom.
